Overhear conversations with your secret spy device, find out the secret blackmarket points, get drawn into Vienna of 1940ies. Inspired by The Third Man, Im Untergrund is an audio adventure game to be played in the city.
You are given a spy device that let’s you enter 1940s Vienna and listen to the smugglers underneath in the underground. You hear their stories, overhear conversations in a cafe, walk above ground following Vienna’s sewage system, listening and deciphering clues.
The main game mechanics are story based riddle solving and audio walks. One chapter will last approximately 30-45 minutes, but different times are possible.
There are two possibilities of creating audio adventures like this one. On the one hand you can use SD-Cards and download audio files from a computer to use as an audio walk. The files automatically play when you are in a specified area. Consequently you need some form of positioning system (wifi triangulation, bluetooth beacons, GPS).
On the other hand it is possible to use radio transmitters in certain locations across the city to send out the story. This streaming device can be built with a RaspberryPi and radio transmitter. When the player is close enough, they will be able to ‘listen in’ on the transmission, with the radio receiver they have as part of their board, like LinzerSchnitte from Ars Electronica Futurelab.
